Biography

Chris Tanner is Professor of Music and the founder and director of the Miami University Steel Band. He is the author of The Steel Band Game Plan: Strategies for Starting, Building and Maintaining Your Pan Program, a comprehensive resource covering all fundamental topics relating to the development of a steel band program, and the first of its kind to be published through a major firm. In 2011 he released his debut recording of original music for steel band and jazz soloists, titled First Impression. He has served as a guest clinician or performing artist at numerous festivals, workshops, high schools and universities. He is a frequently commissioned composer/arranger, and his works are published through Pan Ramajay Productions, Engine Room Publishing, and Panyard, Inc.

DescriptionThis ensemble is designed for students who have developed some mastery of the pans. Music reading skills and at least one year's experience playing steel pans are required. Registrants who do not have their own steel drums will pay a rental fee of $25 to defray the cost of providing and maintaining instruments.

Previous experience playing steel drums is required to enroll in this course and some experience reading music notation is preferred, but not required. Keyboard skills are not required. DescriptionHave you always wanted to be able to improvise a solo for a steel band tune but been afraid to try? Are you baffled by how to figure out, of all the scales and chords possible, which notes to play? Have you experimented with soloing and improvisation but want to improve your skills and learn to be more confident and adventuresome? Students in this three-hour workshop (spread over three days) will learn fundamental concepts of improvisation. Some prior experience playing steel pan is required.

DescriptionThis workshop is for the person who has never played the steel pan but always wanted to try.
