Michael Breez performs and teaches African style marimba (large wooden-keyed xylophones). The vibrant, happy music he teaches has its origins in the village traditions of Zimbabwe, Africa.
Michael met his mentor, the late Dr. Dumisani Maraire in 1978, and in 1979 was invited to join the performance group Dumi & the Maraire Marimba Ensemble and later co-founded the dynamic NW marimba ensemble, Kutamba.
In 1991, Michael and his wife, Osha, co-founded Rufaro School of Marimba and recording/performing group Musasa Marimba Ensemble. They have designed and conducted school programs for children of all ages and aptitudes, and have coached adult groups across the western States, including Alaska & Hawaii, as well as from Canada and Sweden. They continued to study, perform and collaborate with Dumi until his death in 1999.
